So I assumed wrongly the event ending on feb 2 would mean i had the rest of the day to claim items. are the points just gone or will they be transferred to a new vendor? thnx

Once the event ends, the points are gone. They do not transfer.

For what it's worth... people were giving the heads up here and in game that the last (full day) was 2/1 with the vendor going poof on 2/2 at server up; I know I told that to at least 3-4 people in game yesterday.

I'm guessing you won't like this answer, but there have been previous events where the vendor disappeared earlier than thought; this event went exactly as stated on the turn-in vendor ("event ends on 2/2 at 4am EST").
