I don't have a thread for you, but IMO the use of the poisoning skill for a mage template has limited uses since it only actually applies to 2 spells (poison / poison field). It has absolutely zero synergy with mystic.
The only real uses I see for a nox mage is if you are helping with large amounts of mobs and you are throwing down poison fields (and the mobs don't all have magery). You are hitting the targets with greater poison which does a decent amount of damage over time. The poison spell when standing next to a target will inflict deadly poison but the problem is that if they have decent resist it takes multiple attempts and if they have magery it gets cured almost instantly.
To me... the return on 100 skill points of poisoning isn't there. To your point you could do mystic or weaving to get more spells/damage from them for the points invested. If it's a longer fight, I'd probably even go scribe over poisoning because you are getting a bump to SDI which would accumulate over time to every single target rather than just the ones who couldn't cure poison.
That's awesome info to have. Thanks, Kevin! I'd be interested to know what you think of an Archer with Poison skill. Do you think the 100 points is worth it there? Or would it leave an archer gimped?
If you are talking PvM then I'd skip the poison and go for an ABC style build (Archery/Bushido/Chiv); mainly because there is only 1 bow (elven comp) that inflicts poison and would benefit from GM poison... that weapon is simply not as good as a regular comp bow though.
At one point there was a build for PvP that had an archer using an elven comp with serpent arrow but I think it might have been a melee skill as their combat skill with the elven comp with Use Best Skill (or maybe the melee weapons for UBWS??). Idea was to hit someone a time or 2 with AI then disarm them and when they went to run swap over to the elven comp to poison and reg comp for moving shot... it was a long time ago though so not sure if this is viable (or even works) anymore.
I guess my questions would be what do you usually fight/kill and why are you looking to use poison skill (mine has been stoned for a few years now)? If you do champ spawns regularly then it could be used to cast poison fields and run along to find more mobs to attract through the fields... outside of that I don't think poison itself inflicts enough consistent damage to use 100 skill points on it.
The Poisoning skill will increase the strength of Poison and Poison Field. In the case of Poison, there is a distance check.
With 120 Magery, you would need at least 80 Poisoning to get greatest benefit. With 100 Magery, you would need 100 Poisoning.
Poisoning does provide greater resistance to poisons. In my experience, it’s not outright immunity, but you may have a chance to remove it each tick. Less time spent curing is great, as the alternative of relying on Magic Resist doesn’t quite work due to Protection.
In general, Poisoning isn’t that useful for a mage and is less useful for a mystic due to stone form. Poisoning is the weakest damage type, and some monsters are outright immune. The mastery would also be awkward to use for a full mage.
I would find it interesting for some kind of stealth summoner template, where you drop fields and let your summon do the work, but it’s not the most “optimal”. More for fun.
I trained it to close to GM ages ago, not really being sure how it would be applied or if I should even bother. I think for now I'll just go ahead and leave it on a stone rather than take the time to raise it higher or rearrange builds on either my magic users or my ABC archer for it.
I thought maybe I could make a significant difference in fighting with a group if I were casting poison spells and poison field spells. Or if I were able to use it on an archer and poison my arrows.
Thanks you all again for taking the time. Much appreciated.

They answered your questions, but I’ll say as somebody who recently rebuilt (or rather currently is) their archer, it’s too many points for too little gain, given how often you might have a chance to use it at its full potential. I played around on test center a lot, and what I had to sacrifice to work it in just didn’t make sense - I gained a little against some mobs, but lost a lot in dealing with most.
In pvp they worked decently well the last time I tried to compete with the auto target clients.
It's the serpent arrow that's always been subpar. The snake bite seems go off the wrestling and parry of what you're fighting. It's almost comical watching it miss over and over.
Do we really need to have 900 points on our templates?
Poison works great in NL for PvM. It also did till the 2000s.
When the pet revamp came out everyone used poison on pets that could get it, didn't take long to get bored by seeing the 1 tic, or this creature is immune to poison.

You no read good. Where did anyone say we need to have 900 points on our templates? Where did anyone talk about NL?
We know that you are opposed to change unless it comes directly from a Dev and then you pickup your pompoms; regardless of what it is.... but are you even reading what people write or do you just read the thread title and spew random thoughts from your head?
I'm not sure what value your post here (or most places) adds aside from your post count +1... "Poison is green..and I used it just fine that one time I played NL..derr" .

Just my 2 cents though.

Unless you enjoy watching things die of boredom. That's the current state of poison.
