default of 40 resist?

I'm a returning player.  I've been going through the info on my characters and noticed some have a default of 40 resist in all 5 damage types. That's bare naked. What causes that, and is it temporary?

    Resisting Spells. At 100 I think it's 40% base resist to all types.

    Edit: Just checked the wiki. That looks to be it.

    Aroth, thank you.  That is a nice benefit.  Killed while hunting alone, and you get rez'd by a wandering healer. With just your death robe, you still have 40 resists!

    You can insure gear so when you die, it's still in your pack.  So with insurance it still kinda defeats that benefit.

    Feigr, I know about insurance, but thanks. Mainly, I thought the resistance base of 40 is pretty cool.  Plus, on Siege Perilous, there is no insurance, and only one item can be "Siege Blessed".
