Language

I like most am no prude or cloistered nun and can understand when people loose their temper... but I have been subject to bouts of horrid conversation in chat that is down right lower then gutter rats talk!

Don't get me wrong I can see a few flying f words but this makes the f bomb look down right holy.

Seems that some find talking of things in the sexual nature just find for afternoon tea or supper banter.
The words that fly across my screen on Atlantic you cant ignore as they scream them in all caps. Some say ignore them... or turn off chat.  I have when it gets too far to the unexceptable.  The only reason I am telling this now is the fact I had a guest over and was showing them the game (was in hopes of getting them to join in) no chance now of them playing....   The straw that buckled the camels back was one of a anatomy lesson by way of a few players describing things best left to a porno writer!

We do need to clean up the game back to the civil language standards...

I left general chat as so often I read:
    ”Barrac**n up in despise”

I can’t beleive what people get away with.

:D  He left chat because of the things he himself said!  :D

OP:  Next time go to a different chat besides general when you show the game to others.  Your Tea time may be after my Margarita Night.  Also there is a chat filter.
Focus on what you can do, not what you can't.

It is a MMO and like real life there are real bad people with stinking mouth... lol

But unlike real life, we can switch channel or filter.

There was once when I owned a Luna house and was standing just outside the door, and 2 guys walked in and started to literally curse and threaten me to hand over the house (yes please laugh). I read the first few line, then i stepped onto the teleporter, and forget about them.

The only way you are going to do that is to clean up the world, until then you'll need to use your filter and ignore list.

I actually had lot of people on the ignore list, on my old computer.
And one day, a guild member, told me someone was asking after me all day.
They needed something that I usually stocked on my vendor.
And I didn't see their message cause they were on my ignore list...
Not sure if they were put their cause of their potty mouth
or just from their attitude in chat...

I have also been trying to get some family members to play UO. My sister also had an experience just like Lady Storm did. And because of it, she will never play UO.

When you tell someone to watch their language, in general chat, they will tell you to filter it out. Then they curse you out some more. We shouldn't have to filter it out, cause it shouldn't be allowed at all. Telling someone to filter it out, is basically saying its ok.

Cursing at someone is offensive and I wish there was punishment for it. If someone is talking like that and you ask them to stop, then they continue to do so... they should be punished. I'm not saying to ban their account... more like throw them in jail for so many hours. I guarantee they would learn fast not to do it any more.

My cousin got thrown in jail in 06' or 07' for afk macroing. Her char wasn't doing anything but she was away from her computer (kids had called her away), but was in her house. When she came back, her char was in jail. She had to spend 40 hours on that char and until that time was spent, she couldn't get on any of her chars on that account. She had to physically move her char for 40 hours. She couldn't stop for more than two seconds or she would be logged out. And her char could not speak in any chat channel or to any of the people who passed by her cell. I'm not sure which jail she was in, but I remember watching her do this. And believe me, after that, she always logged out when her kids called her away from the game.

Some would say that would be extreme for potty mouth, but as someone who was constantly harassed by someone for two weeks. Hearing those words are very hurtful and actually made me want to quit. Until someone told me how to ignore that person, I had to listen to every hurtful comment. In this instance, if the person had just told me why they were mad at me to begin with, I would have understood why they were mad. I didn't know that when you earthquake, that in EC, your screen shakes. but I never should have been violated with words like that. NOBODY should have to filter out profanity...

  • Maybe you shouldn't have to filter it out,  but that is exactly what you will have to do. The devs and GM's are too spread out and busy enough as it is and unable to police every chat on every shard at all times. until people get past their obsession with being anonymous jerks on the internet we'll have to put up with crude language. Life is not fair and you cannot make someone else change their ways just because you want them to.  Just use your filter and feel sorry for their mommas.

Sadly even though it has always been against the ToS UO has never enforced it and they tell you to use the filter, so why doesn't UO just put in their own filter system for the game and enforce their own rules.
  • Oh but they do sanction the potty mouths when they catch them...  What this was about was to ask players here to help stop this in its tracks, If enough players told them to curb it and passed it on to their guilds leaders perhaps we as the paying public can help.  Friends kids who want to see what dad has been raving about or the wife who is hesitant to play gets a eye full of this and its auto turn off.... UO looses.   You do know we have that much power, if Guilds can give bylaws that members must follow,, why not aid the game in this?

The issue is actually that people rage when they die and this is when most of the bad language occurs. I raised the issue here however the devs said that there’s no point blocking it in chat cos they can communicate by “literally any other means”
    https://forum.uo.com/discussion/1356/sprit-speak-in-global-chat#latest

Unfortunately the thread was closed prematurely  so we couldn’t dispute this. As most other out of game chat programs require the user’s permission to communicate with a third party.

Also, why do moderators moderate the forums if there’s no point in blocking bad language cos people can communicate through “literally any other means”?

To be fair, the bug didn’t get rejected, was just deemed low priority.

(in the bug report I mistakenly referred to “global” chat when I meant “general” chat however I was able to clarify the report in internal conversation)
