Timer on Edit

Any reason for the 'timer' of 1 hour on the ability to edit posts?  This is seriously gonna affect those threads where the OP needs to update for lists etc.  Any reason for this?  Can always put an 'edited' date on so that people can see if something gets edited way after posting.
