Do the parry mastery skills require a shield to execute or be worth a flip?

My samurai has 110+ parry but rarely uses a shield, you know, because of the bushido. I guess I could just use bushido mastery which is ok, but I do like some of the parry skills if I can use them without a shield. 

I have a primer and just wondering who I should give it to. Ill get another so it is not a huge deal but if shield bash and body guard require a shield then I may give it to another character once they get to 100 who actually uses a shield.

true. I wish the requirements were a little more described. Though, something like holy fist I think can be done without wrestling. So, I don’t quite know what UO is thinking sometimes. So, not always quite obvious. Maybe a little obvious.
