Is there a secret to getting this drop? or is it just that the RNG hates me? 
I'm sure last time I tried it I only had to kill 3 or 4, I've killed enough the past 2 days to get 40k gold off them and all they have is carrots. I'm about at the point of deciding trying to make the hitching post is not worth the effort.

I had the very same problem back in 2016 when I tried to do the same, finally gave up and went to the Origin store.  I am sure the Rabbit said to tell Origin "I sent you". :P

I got two in about 30 mins there (I also was looting all creatures my pet was killing too)
