I don't see how renaming would be possible. Every time you dry dock your ship and then launch it again a new pilot is generated.

to the best of my knowledge, no, slayers do not work on pirate captains. To confirm this use a character with animal lore. If the message received is 'that is not an animal', then no slayer will work on it.

I am happily doing this with a crew of the tiller man and a summoned daemon using my bard. The tillerman steers the ship to my commands.

My thief uses the bleue set from clean up for jewels, her suit is mainly geared to lrc, luck and hpr. With good hpr on the suit you can regain health while remaining hidden if it is unwise to reveal to cast.
